The Modern Day Cowboy

In order for us to get an understanding of the modern day cowboy, we must first take a step back and explore their origins. Cowboys originated in Texas in the days after the Civil War. When the ranchers realized that they had plenty of supply, but they didn’t have any suppliers. Seeking to gain profit, they began to migrate to Oklahoma. Cowboys still exist today, but some have changed their techniques dramatically.

Many cowboys have adopted the use of planes and trucks to assist in herding, in contrast to the ropes they originally used to wrangle. In addition, modern cowboys live in nice homes with their families, and enjoy the same luxuries that any average American has today. However, there are other cowboys who purposely decline to evolve in order to keep the traditions of their ancestors. This way is obviously more time consuming, and requires a more patient and skillful technique.

Even though there is more labor involved in the older methods, it is worth all the extra work to those who want to preserve their heritage. Whether or not cowboys will continue to evolve as the rest of the world does remains to be seen, but there is one thing that is for certain. Whether they are wearing jeans and carrying a rope or operating a new truck, cows will always need to be herded, and cowboys are the right men for the job. We will always need the services they provide.
