Farming from Yesterday, Today and into the Future

The beginning of almost every country in the world began with farming. In the early days families raised livestock and crops in an effort to provide food and clothing for the family. As improvements in science, machinery, plant varieties and fertilizers have evolved, farming has become easier. In the early days the work was labor intensive and took the whole family working the fields to produce enough food to survive.

Farmers today have begun looking at innovative ways to increase yield and reduce costs to farming for sustainable farming solutions. With estimates of population increasing by another 3 billion people by the year 2050, farmers are looking for ways to integrate systems of plant and animal production with site specific applications and make the most of non-renewable resources and to integrate natural biological cycles and controls. The farmer of today is looking to the future needs and available resources to provide for human food and fiber needs with continuing the economic viability and quality of life for farming operations, farmers and society. One innovative solution being considered is vertical farming. With climate changes farmers have seen increasing changes in weather from flooding, droughts and devastating storms that obliterate valuable crops each year. Vertical farming provides numerous advantages to traditional horizontal farming. A few of the advantages are increased production per unit/acre, no weather related crop failures , food is grown organically meeting the desire of today’s consumers, our precious water sources are used in a more efficient manner with recycling, energy conservation is accomplished with composting of the non-edible parts of the plants and with no use for tractors and plowing a reduction in the use of fossil fuels.

Today's farmers are innovative and proficient in business administration.
