Learning to ride a horse is one of the most freeing and fun exercises out there. There is no feeling like galloping across a field on the back of a magnificent animal with wind blowing through your hair. If you are first learning to ride, it is important to know a few things. Make sure to find an instructor that is a professionally trained horseback instructor with experience. You can do this by calling horseback riding facilities in your area, or asking friends and family. Once you have an instructor it is important to sit down with them and communicate that you are a beginner, find out what types of lessons they offer and work together on a long term goal for your riding ability.
Before getting on the horse make sure to watch others ride so that you can get an idea of what it looks like to ride a horse, and what techniques are being used by other more experienced riders. Learning to ride English is probably the best way to start, because it requires more balance and is the foundation for riding it makes any other type of riding easier to learn. Because English style riding is more technical then other types of riding, it can help you segway into other type of less technical riding (Western). Another important thing is to make sure you go out there and have fun, like anything else there will be safety precautions you will need to take, but horseback riding is one of the most enjoyable activities you can participate in and have fun with your family and friends.
