Rural areas have little pollution and houses are widely separated by fields and gardens with space to enjoy the outdoors and have pets. Life moves slowly and peaceably since sound pollution is almost non-existent, resulting in less stress.
Modern technology is not always available in rural areas, and shopping malls are far apart. Planning and use of libraries can overcome that. To avoid making unnecessary trips, all members of the household can keep a shopping list. Trips should be planned so destinations are reached without backtracking. Longer driving time allows the driver to have quality time with children.
Everyone knows their neighbors, so carpooling and doing favors for a neighbor is a way of life. They help one another in practical ways and emotionally, thus becoming good friends. Teachers know their students’ families, enabling them to help the students achieve their potential. Doctors know their patients and can make more complete diagnosis, and they can refer their patients to specialists.
Residents in urban areas have access to modern technology, such as the internet, television and satellite communication, and shopping centers, theaters and restaurants abound. Educational facilities and career opportunities enable people to have stable economic lives, letting them accumulate luxuries. The higher crime rate leads to distrust between people, and it can be harder to develop close friendships. Another problem with some urban cities is a lack of public transportation, and the ever-increasing city traffic leads to long travel times to work or school. Rural areas, while often further from work and school, have less traffic.
Overall, rural and urban areas both have advantages. It depends on the wishes and desires of people where they should live.
