Horseback riding is a fun and exciting way to enjoy the out doors. You can ride a horse on beaches, farm, in the national parks and enjoy trail rides in the Rocky Mountains. If you are learning to ride you should look for a qualified instructor to guide your progress and teach you safety on your horse. The skills that you will need will be less scary and easier when learning from a good riding instructor.
The horses are taught a number of skills depending on what kind of riding they will be used for. The competitive horses will be trained for sports and different events such as rodeo and racing. The non-competitive horses will be trained for riding and hunting. Some horses are trained for therapeutic riding to help the people that suffer physical, social, and emotional special needs. These people can benefit by learning a skill to use all their life and enjoy riding anywhere.
The beginning lessons are always given in a horse arena. This will include learning how to saddle a horse, the grooming of the horse, learning ground control and the trot and canter for the horse. Some training can take place on weekends at a camp that will last three days and include board and meals. The lessons are taught first then put into practical use as the student learns how to ride a horse. There is usually a trail ride on the last day with the instructors for the students to put into practice what they have learned.
