The western United States is a vast region of often open land. It is also the most geographically diverse, consisting of regions such as the Pacific Coast, the temperate rain forests of the Northwest, the Rocky Mountains, the Great Plains, the Western Ozark plateau, the Gulf Coast, and all of the desert area of the United States. The desert areas of the west are the Mojave desert, the Sonora desert, and the Great Basin.
The west is often broken down into regions, such as Arizona and New Mexico are always considered to be in the Southwest. Portions of California, Colorado, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah are sometimes considered part of the Southwest. There also seems to be a water crisis in the Western United States that has already altered the region's river flow, snow packs, and even the air temperature. Climate experts foretell of water shortages and the lack of storage capability to meet the seasonal changing river flow, transfers of water from agriculture to urban uses, and other critical impacts. The researchers have tracked water flow in three major rivers: the Columbia River, the Colorado River, and the Sacramento River.
