When someone mentions western riding are they referring to the old western movies with the ever so romantic cowboy riding to the rescue of a damsel in distress? Or maybe they are thinking of the old west cowboys from the great wide spread ranches of the western states. Whatever the vision western riding is a spectacular method of exercise, relaxation, solitude and just an overall joy. There isn’t anything more enjoyable for an experienced rider than riding at full speed on a fast horse with the wind rushing though your hair. And, if it happens to be one's business endeavor, it can be quite profitable in the areas of cutting events, horse show events such as halter, reining, pleasure, trail or the sports competitions. Then there are the rodeo events, team roping, calf roping and bull dogging, that are very profitable to the rodeo cowboy if they happen to be the top competitor.
However, probably the most sought after western riding is by the tourist from big cities or foreign countries where western riding is not readily available. There are summer camps for learning to ride western style that are located on some of the ranches in the western states. Also there are opportunities to spend time on a dude ranch, some of which are located on ocean front property so you will experience the enjoyment of riding on the sand and surf.
Western horseback riding requires certain skills that are made easy because of the way the western saddle is constructed. It is made originally to balance the rider with the horse when the cowboy roped a cow out on the range. It was also created to provide as much comfort as possible for the cowboy who was in the saddle all day out on the ranch land.
