Farm Life

Although the hustle and excitement of urban life attracts many people in America today, farm life is still a very real existence, sustaining a bounty of families across the country. Some farms consist only of crop fields, some are large commercial farms, and others are just family farms that include a plethora of farm animals, vegetable gardens, and lots of children.

Life on a farm may be easier in the 21st century than it was a hundred years ago, but aside from plumbing and electricity, it isn’t that different. Cows still need to be milked, chickens fed, and chores to be done. Farm life usually still begins at the crack of dawn with families working together to mutually benefit each other and their homes. Sustaining a farm or ranch dictates constant work, as there is always something that needs to be fixed, completed, or begun. From tending the garden to harvesting crops, there is always a job to do.

Most who live on farms must commute to an outside job. Farm life is usually not the primary income source as it once was. Usually, one or both parents uphold paid positions to pay the bills, and farms are often a lifestyle choice. Choosing a life with animals and land means a great deal of sacrifice, mostly in the form of time and money, as the work never ends, and repairs, maintenance, and keeping the animals healthy can be expensive. Life can be difficult but incredibly rewarding, as families are usually very close, and life lessons are learned daily as animals live and die by the care the families give them. Children learn early to value life as they work together to care for their homes and each other, an education they will carry with them through adult life.
