Farming: The Age Old Occupation

Farming has been done for thousands of years. A farm is considered to be a parcel of land which is primarily used for producing food or grain crops or cattle. Although in recent years the term farm has grown to mean more than that.

Farming is one of the most important occupations there is but there are not as many people farming today as there have been in the past. Some farms are owned by an individual or a family unit. Then there are the larger farms which are controlled by a company or corporation. Some of the farms consist of just a few acres, just enough to produce for the family and maybe a little more to sell. But of course a farm might consist of thousands of acres.

There are different types of farming such as raising cattle to sell or to be butchered. You might also raise pigs for the slaughter house. Then you might consider a stud farm. If you want to have cows just to produce milk then you would run a dairy farm. Some farmers would prefer to raise poultry which is usually then sold to one of the major chicken producers.

If you are not into farm animals, you might want to farm in order to raise grains to feed either humans or cattle. Some of the crops you might grow would be wheat, alfalfa, corn or other grains.

You can also do other types of farming such as growing fruits and vegetables which would be considered market farming. On the other hand there are also fish farms and tree farms to consider.
