Horseback riding can be enjoyable and relaxing. However, before you go there are some things to take into consideration prior to making the venture with your equine friend. A few things to ponder would be safety, your skills, terrain, fitness for both you and the horse, and the style that you plan on riding.
First and foremost is safety. You need to make sure that the horse is saddled properly, that the terrain is something that the both you and the horse can handle, and that the horses’ health is up to the task. Is your comfort level such that you could lead a horse, cinch, turn, trot, jog, or bridle? If you are unsure about what these terms mean, then you should consider a quick lesson before venturing out. It will only help you in the long run.
The next consideration is the terrain you plan on riding. Both you and your horse need to have the proper fitness level when conquering any type of terrain. A quick inspection of a horse can help you determine the level of activity your horse can handle, and a quick assessment of your own fitness level will give you an idea of what you can handle, and for how long. Check the horse for any problems such as leg problems, poor appetite, standing position, and expression. If the horse is stabled, then a stable hand can help with all of these observations.
Lastly is the riding style. There are three main styles: English (sidesaddle), Western (traditional straddle), and Bareback (no saddle). Once you determine your skill level, health and fitness, and terrain you plan to ride, you will be set for a great adventure. Be safe, be smart, and have fun.
