Farming

Farming has been going on for as long as anyone can remember. Farming is defined as being primarily the practice producing and managing food. A farm can be owned by an individual, family, community, corporation or a company. In the beginning farming was a lifestyle. As time progressed it became more for businesses than for the small farmers.

Just about everyone use to live on a small farm. Most of these farms were owned by an individual or a family. The land was used to grow food to keep the family and the animals on the farm going. The staple of these many farms in the US was corn. It worked in feeding the animals and could be turned into a corn mush. There was not always food left over to sell to the market. The primary use was for the family.

New scientific methods and labor saving machines came along which revolutionized farming and turned it into an industry. The tractor and diesel engines for plowing took the place of laborers. All of this growth was forcing the small farmers out of business. They could not compete with the bigger farms. The production sped up and doubled on the farm. Nowadays farming is largely in the hands of the corporations and big companies. Farming is an occupation that will be around for a very long time. It has come a long way since the early days when oxen used to plow the fields.
