Culture in the Western United States

The culture of the western United States is certainly rich in history. The history of the west conjures up images of a wild and lawless time complete with cowboys, deadly gunslingers, cattle ranchers and gold prospectors. The eastern portion of the country had grown into a more social and civilized society while the west was untamed therefore taking on characteristics of wild adventure. As settlers moved west, the cultures of the Anglos and Hispanics merged. The combination of clothing, food, language and religion is what makes of the culture of the western United States today.

Food is large part of the western culture. The demand for beef spurred the emergence of cattle ranches. The idea of managing enormous herds with horses actually came from Mexico. Cowboys were able to drive cattle over large areas while controlling them. Due to the climate, there are many types of foods grown there. The large vineyards, particularly in California, are home to some of the finest wineries. Idaho is a large potato producing state. The Pacific northwest contains large fruit producing orchards that are shipped throughout the country.

The Chinese people immigrated to the west, bringing with them their culture which blended with what was already there. Cultural holidays are celebrated as well such as the Chinese New Year and Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday. Native American culture is also a part of the mixed culture. Their influences and traditions are evident throughout the west especially in Arizona and Colorado. Even though the west has grown tremendously from the scenes of the old west, one can still feel its presence from the melding of so many cultures.
