Farming in the Western United States is in most ways the same as farming in the Eastern United States. Of course there are always some differences. You will find that the Western United States consists of 17 states from Texas to the Dakotas and west from there. The wheat belt which is from Texas north to the Dakotas produces most of the wheat and soybeans for the United States and also for exportation to other countries. Texas is also the largest producer of cattle and sheep as well as cotton. Idaho is known for their farm production of potatoes while Washington state is famous for their apple crops.
Irrigation is used on some of the farms but not really a large percentage. It is used in some areas to allow farmers to grow finer crops of fruits and vegetables and nuts as well as hay and grain. It is even used to grow flowers. With the farms raising livestock it has become an environmental concern in regard to the soil and runoff into the surface waters.
In addition one of the latest and seems to be fastest growing types of farms would be wind farms. Arizona is currently giving tax breaks and government funding to electric companies which will work on transferring to solar wind energy. Arizona is a good place for this type of farm because of the hot sun, winds and prairies along with their geothermal pools underground. There are also over 8300 acres of wind turbines located in Montana.
