Once you have ridden a horse into the fields or on a trail, you will understand the joy of horseback riding. People who enjoy the outdoors and hiking will appreciate having the horse do most of the work. You can enjoy all the benefits of being outdoors without the noise or pollution of a motorcycle or ATV. You can enjoy all the excitement of racing up and down hills with a powerful animal under your control, yet still see nature without tearing it up or scaring off the wildlife. Plus, you have the advantage of being seven or eight feet above the ground with a better view of the scenery.
Horses are quiet. On the trail you are likely to see sights you wouldn't normally see if you were walking. It is not uncommon to come across deer, wild turkeys, foxes, and other native wildlife while exploring the woods on the back of a horse. You can travel 25 to 50 miles a day on horseback and see far more of nature than you ever could hiking or walking. You can forge rivers and creeks, swim in lakes and ponds and explore areas that you might not be able to reach on foot.
If trail riding does not appeal to you, riding and training a horse to show is also a lot of fun. Horses are very responsive and willing to learn. Teaching them new things and then watching them “get” it is very exciting. The more you ride and the more you practice, the easier it gets to perform the maneuvers you have taught him. Riding in a show is very exciting. Even if you don't win, the joy of having your horse perform in front of a crowd is exceptionally rewarding, especially if you have taught him yourself. The more you ride, the better you will get, also. It is much more fun to ride when you don't have to worry about staying on the horse.
