You can have a great time vacationing in western America by horseback riding. There are working cattle ranches that you can ride on and actually go on cattle drives, which involve bringing cattle in from out on the range. There are also dude ranches where you can sleep in a bunk house one night and then under the stars the next night, maybe a few days in a row. You may even be doing regular ranch duties like mending fences. This way you will get the idea what a real life cowboy would do on a working ranch.
Now if you would like to see a beautiful part of western America you would like Wyoming, known to be "The Cowboy State." It is a big prairie that was formed years ago from volcanic and glacier activity which is now used for raising cattle. You will also see antelope and deer roaming on this prairie. If you would like to spend some more time riding a horse you could always go to the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area which is in The Big Horn National Forrest.
Now to see the most beautiful part of the West you can travel to Arizona and Utah. There is what they call the Long Valley Cattle Drive which is located down in the Bryce Canyon area. They take the cows down to the North Brim of the Grand Canyon. You can ride down into the Grand Canyon on mules you can rent. You are not allowed to take your own horse because the mules are trained specifically to navigate the narrow trails.
